Whilst looking to study L3 in counselling I was drawn to Step by Step Counselling College straight away after reading the reviews. Genuine comments from their students for me were the best evidence of how great this place is. I signed up and found out that they are even better than I expected. So good that I signed up for L4 without looking any further. I can not highly recommend this College. The tutors are exceptional, and their expertise has been invaluable in helping me develop my skills and knowledge. I highly recommend Becky and Simon to anyone interested in pursuing a career in counselling.

There are SO many positive things I could say about Step by Step Counselling College and I can't recommend them enough. I've just completed my level 3 qualification with them and enjoyed every minute of it. The tutors are incredibly welcoming, supportive and knowledgeable. They create a really safe space right from the start, which is so important during this type of training. I have now decided to carry on my training and embark on the level 4 diploma - I couldn't imagine doing it anywhere else. If you're looking to get started on your journey to become a counsellor, or continue your path to becoming fully qualified, then this is the perfect place to do so.

Where do I start

I have done a lot of research over several years when I was looking at finding the right training facility with the right ethos and ‘feel’ that I was looking for. I’d spoken to a few local colleges already, and had even paid a non refundable deposit to one, however, they didn’t fit what I was looking for.

Work and life got in the way on several occasions meaning I had to put the start of my training on hold. Maybe it was the universes way of intervening and guiding me towards Step by Step Counselling.

As soon as I spoke with Becky I felt at ease and comfortable straight away, she spent over an hour on the phone with me, giving me all the information I needed and then some.

On the first evening I met Simon I felt exactly the same, both of them are warm, accommodating and very knowledgeable, they feel like part of the group rather than having a ‘them and us’ approach as tutors, which is refreshing in itself.

The college itself is a relaxed environment, albeit we are required to put in the effort of course to meet all the criteria set. The college is very accommodating and has a really lovely informal feel to it.

I think I echo what most of my classmates would say, in that we always ‘come alive’ when we arrive and leave feeling content after every session.

There are no airs and graces, no strict timetables or routines, and conversations or discussions often take us off on a tangent and down a rabbit hole or two, but for me, this is the best way to learn.

Both Becky and Simon ensure we have a good understanding of the work set before leaving and their support is second to none at any point it is needed.

I personally couldn’t recommend the college enough.

I cannot recommend Step By Step Counselling College highly enough. My experience of studying the level 3 Advanced Certificate in Counselling and the level 4 Diploma has been excellent all the way through. Simon & Becky are excellent tutors and they have facilitated a safe, supportive and caring learning environment where all students are valued. College days have always been informative and fun and I have always looked forward to going in.

I studied my level 4 diploma in therapeutic counselling at Step by Step and I enjoyed the course immensely. I chose the college initially because I wanted a setting to train in a smaller group then some of the larger organizations offer. I was so pleased with my choice as the Tutors were incredibly supportive and invested in their students progress. Their passion for both practicing and teaching counselling themselves shines through in everything they do. The training and personalised feedback in all areas such as essays and skills was incredible and in many ways transformational. I particularly loved how each Tutor brought something different to their sessions, often beyond the level 4 syllabus requirements.
This means as a student you receive enhanced training in other areas the Tutors are passionate about such as ecotherapy, with sessions such as walk and talk therapy days woven into the syllabus, all this makes for a fabulous experience. I also found the location very easy to get to and the layout of the building means there is plenty of space to spread out and do skills practice which they encouraged us to do as much as possible to combine as much practical learning alongside the theory.
A huge amount of creativity and imagination is brought to many of the lectures to help keep students focused and engaged in a full weekend of learning.
I was also lucky enough to have a fantastic cohort of students to work alongside too and have made some amazing friendships along the way.
I really can’t recommend Becky and Simon enough, if you are looking to train somewhere where you are seen not just as a student but seen as an individual, then Step by Step is definitely for you.

I did level 2, 3 and 4 with Step by Step and wouldn’t change it for the world. I don’t think it is possible to find the same anywhere else, it is a unique college in that it is such a nice cosy and comfortable environment, not like a “proper college”, there are comfy sofas, lovely cosy breakout rooms, blankets, yet still everything you would need in terms of objects, books, counselling tools etc. Then there are the lovely tutors who are incredibly supportive and understanding of peoples situation, they live in the real world and are very lenient and offer you all of the support that you could ask for. I would say it is a much more intimate experience vs other colleges out there and you really get that 1-1 support from the tutors and are in a safe, confidential and comfortable environment. Will very much miss going to college every other Wednesday but I know that the tutors are still there for me if I require any help. Couldn’t recommend it enough. I would 100% go back and do it all again and I cannot say that for any other college experience I have had!

I can't lie, level 3 counselling was sometimes difficult, we went to some pretty painful places. I have to say though, Step by Step is definitely the place to learn how to be a counsellor, it's an amazing, intimate environment, which I found really helped me to open up when I needed to. The tutors are incredible, I can honestly say some of the feedback on my assignments has changed my life. It wasn't just saying that my work was good, but giving me real advice as to where my strengths as a counsellor might be.
I've just finished level 3, and will be doing level 4 with Step by Step in July, and I honestly can't imagine training to become a counsellor anywhere else.

So I'm adding to this review, having completed the college bit of the Level 4 diploma, and I still say the the tutors are the best, and I can't imagine learning to be a counsellor anywhere else. There is a lot of work in the diploma, but it's so insightful, and the atmosphere in the building is beautiful. I'd recommend Step by Step any time!!

I trained with Step by Step from level 3 all the way to level 4 (3ish years in total, I believe). I've now completed my level 4 course and have found a placements with DCCP. The course was incredible and super supportive. They offered a lot of flexibility and supported me throughout. They have a long list of placement options for those nearing the end of their level 4. Simon and Becky are amazing tutors. It as a pleasure to be a part of it's genesis and evolution; you would never of known it was a newer organisation at the begging; a testament to their ability and capacity.

I will 100% be using their services again for future courses
