We were a group of 5 and stayed for 3 nights to walk The Isaac Tea Trail. I would gladly have stayed longer to explore the area because it was very friendly and comfortable. We did our own catering and the kitchen was well equipped and the hostel was conveniently situated near a very good Spar shop at the garage that was open from early morning to 10pm. It was also a short walk to get a pub meal. You could have catered meals in the hostel and only needed to order by 6pm that day. They looked very good, particularly the cooked breakfasts. The water was hot and we had no trouble getting a shower when we wanted one. The beds were comfortable. Other guests were friendly and a lot were walking The Pennine Way. The lounge area was a good place to relax and had an ongoing jigsaw. At the start I was worried about a possible foot problem and so was thrilled to find that you could have access to the hostel all day. We had one extremely wet day and so were grateful for the drying room. I would definitely recommend.

I stayed at the hostel as I was walking the Pennine Way. Mat, the owner, picked me up from a nearby village as it was getting late which was very good of him.|The facilities were very good with an excellent drying room. The self catering kitchen was well equipped, the bathrooms clean and the single room was clean and warm.|The evening meal was very good and filling, just what I needed and the breakfast was good too.|The location is spot on, right on the Pennine Way, there an excellent Spar just up the road.

A warm welcome from the owner, and arrangements made regarding the limited parking.|Coffee available on arrival. |Clean bedroom, shared bathroom and communal spaces. Relaxed ambiance.|Well-maintained. Quiet at night.|Pleasant dining room and lounge. Lots of books and games available. A plus point for me is the absence of a TV.|Wasn't self-catering on this occasion, but the guests' kitchen looked very usable.|Breakfast (veggie cooked) was fine, Dinner (chilli and rice) less so. ||The only downside was the lack of a washbasin in my private room. Though the hostel wasn't busy so no pressure on the single mens' facility.

I stayed here for a couple of nights in June. I liked it. I voted with my feet and came back for another two nights. Says it all, really.|But I'll say more. This is a stand-out hostel because Mat has a financial incentive to make it work and has a vision of how it should be run to be a warm and cosy haven after an arduous day hiking (it's on the Penine Way) or cycling (near to C2C). On arrival I was made to feel welcome and availed myself of a free coffee. My room and all common areas were clean and well-maintained. The food was good - particulaly breakfast + excellent coffee - but with a Spar 100m away self catering is perfectly possible too.|Mat is creating an easy-going atmosphere where hostellers talk to each other in comfortable surroundings. I think this to be welcomed and I hope Mat is successful in achieving this because I intend coming back (again).

We were given a very warm welcome and shown around the hostel. Mat was an excellent and humorous host. |All very clean and everything we needed worked. Food looked very tasty although we hadn’t booked to eat there. |A busy hostel which proves its popularity. |We’d definitely return there.

There was a group of us staying over for the weekend, walking the Isaac Tea Trail. Matt welcomed us on arrival with a friendly smile and a hive of information on our accommodation and local facilities. The building was clean and warm, with a well equipped kitchen, hot showers and very comfy beds. Some of our group ordered cooked breakfast and packed lunches. which all looked very tasty. The location of the hostel was perfect to hit local trails and the main centre, with warm friendly pubs serving good food in the evening.|Matt informed us of their up and coming plans for renovations over the winter months, all to improve stays for future guest. We plan to return to Alston Youth Hostel in the future. Thank you

Stayed one night on our coast to coast cycling trip last weekend and though it had been years since I stayed in a YHA I was not disappointed. Got a friendly welcome, plenty of information imparted, comfy beds (bunk beds), hot showers, and plenty of space in the kitchen to cook our own evening meal. We booked breakfast and that was a very good experience - full English hit the spot. Secure storage for bikes though by the time we arrived it was full but we could store our bikes in the adjacent drying room so all good. I'd recommend a stay here if you're travelling like us or just doing activities around the are alike most of the other riders were doing.

Great place to stay with nearby shops, pubs and cafes. Great if hilly place to cycle around with some good routes out. Stayed with a group of bike riders and had a superb weekend trip away. Warden was very very helpful and welcoming. Fabulous in all kinds of ways
