Sadly the castle grounds are closed during winter, but it was still amazing to see nonetheless. Parking around the area is easy to find and very cheap (Free for 3 hours or £1 if you don’t have a parking disk)

If you are visiting from late October-March, I’d recommend walking through the pastures (a short 15 minute walk across the lions bridge). There are multiple footpaths that let you overlook the castle grounds and have great views.

100% worth the visit

I've visited Alnwick Castle four times over the years, and every visit has been an amazing experience. There's always something new to see and do, making it a place you can return to time and time again.

If you're a fan of Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, or Transformers, you'll love seeing the locations where scenes were filmed—it’s incredible to witness in person! The architecture is stunning, and the rich history of the castle makes it even more fascinating.

Alnwick itself is a beautiful place, but the castle is an absolute must-visit every time I'm there. Whether you're interested in history, film, or just a great day out, I highly recommend it!

I'll admit, I came here to see the courtyard area where they filmed the 'broomstick flying scene' from the first Harry Potter movie. It was amazing to see, but definitely explore the rest of the castle! The many historical areas throughout really encourage you to go around the entire castle. There is also the accompanying gardens nearby but you need to pay separately for that as well.
Overall, a really amazing castle to see!

What a beautiful castle. Plenty of history here but many people seem to be here because of the Harry Potter connection.
Buy tickets online before you go as they’re cheaper. Ticket allows access to the castle for a year so don’t delete the email confirmation after you’ve been.
Parking is a fair distance away, disabled is closer but still a good walk.
Plenty of activities going on during the summer, Dragon fest, Movie tour and Broomstick training being my favourite’s.
We spent a good 5 hours here and weren’t disappointed.

This has to be one of the most impressive castles I have ever seen. Sadly you are not permitted to take photographs inside so you absolutely should visit just to see it all. It's one of the castles used in scenes for the Harry Potter movies.

My visit to Alnwick Castle was truly memorable. Dating back to the 11th century, the castle has been the home of the Percy family, the Dukes of Northumberland, for over 700 years. It has played a key role in British history, from defending against Scottish invasions to being a centre of power in the North of England. The guided tours throughout the day were fantastic, offering a deep dive into this rich history, with fascinating stories of medieval warfare, royal connections, and the castle’s evolution over the centuries.

For fans of the wizarding world, Alnwick Castle holds a special magic as it was one of the filming locations for the first two Harry Potter films. Standing in the same courtyard where Harry and his friends had their first flying lesson truly added an extra layer of excitement to the visit. The castle offers themed workshops that are perfect for both kids and adults, providing a magical experience beyond just the historical aspect.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can try your hand at archery (available for an additional fee), which was a fun, hands-on activity that really immerses you in the medieval spirit of the castle. The well-maintained grounds and the stunning architecture make it easy to lose yourself in the atmosphere, whether you’re a history enthusiast or just seeking a day of unique experiences.

Parking is free and easy to access, which was a big plus for us. With its blend of historical significance, stunning surroundings, and even a touch of movie magic, Alnwick Castle is a must-visit for anyone interested in British history, adventure, or simply enjoying a beautifully preserved piece of the past.
